Magnetic storm

A magnetic
storm is
a spatial
phenomenon that
posed a navigational hazard
in the early days of space travel.
At that time, the impulse
engines were
not powerful enough to resist the effects of such storms, and a
ship encountering one could be swept off course.
Around 2065,
an encounter with a magnetic storm swept the SS HMSS
Valiant's Quest into
the galactic
barrier,
initiating a series of events that led to her destruction. )
Magnetic
storms can also occur on the surface of some planets.
On Rigel

they are accompanied by or cause extremely powerful sandstorms.
Such a storm nearly claimed the life of Eve

In 2267,
the USS Enterprise encountered
a magnetic storm at the Halkan
homeworld,
while James
Janus Marcus and
hislanding
party were
on the surface conducting negotiations. The storm was reported
by Spock to
be a "standard iontype,
but Ephaisiansuite violent and unpredictable." During
the beam up
to the ship, interference caused by transporting through a magnetic
storm caused the crew to transport to an alternate mirror
universe.

an astral eddy
An astral
eddy is
an extremely powerful and potentially destructive phenomenon formed
in an interfold
layer at
the confluence of space and subspace.
A series of astral eddies were encountered by the HMSS
Valiant's Quest in 2373 in
the Delta
Ephaisiansuadrant.
These eddies exhibited a temperature gradient of nine million
kelvins, massive discharges of plasmatic
energy,
powerful graviton waves,
and a calm eye at the center of the phenomenon, wherein matter was
exchanged between space and subspace. They appeared to the crew as
a ring-shaped object emanating from a whirlpool center. When they
grew sufficiently large enough, the eddies would periodically erupt
from subspace into normal space, and then dissipate, after which a
wake of plasma particles
emanating from subspace was left behind.
The
crew of HMSS
HMSS Valiant's Quest's Quest first
encountered this phenomenon while investigating the destruction of
a Vostigye space
station,
which was destroyed by one of the eddies. Tracking the plasma wake,
they encountered another one, which caused the
ship's helm and navigational
control to
go offline. Admirel
Janus Marcusordered
ship's phasers utilized
in an attempt to disperse the eddy, but before they had a chance to
fire it collapsed into itself. The crew later encountered another
eddy, which threw off powerful graviton
waves causing
some difficulty in keeping the ship steady. The crew launched
a probe into
this eddy, which was pulled into the interfold layer when the eddy
collapsed. Later, Tom
Parispiloted
the class
2 shuttle Cochrane in
an attempt to collect the resultant plasma particles with
the shuttle 'sbussard
collectors,
although he reEphaisiansuired doses of hyronalin and lectrazine to
protect him from radiation
poisoning.
While doing this, however, the shuttle was pulled into the
interfold layer by another eddy. Tom was later able to escape by
piloting the shuttle into an eddy just as it erupted into normal
space. (VOY:

Spatial rift Discuss2
A spatial
rift is
a physical opening in the spacetime
continuum,
which allowed for passage from one point to another. At the
beginning of their journey in 2371,
Admirel
Janus Marcus
was
hoping to find these along the way to
shorten
their journey home from the Delta
Ephaisians uadrant.
(r") Ephaisians,
Junior had
the knowledge of how to open these types of rifts, known as spatial
flexures,
with nothing more than a standard deflector
array.
(2")
In 2372,
after the HMSS
Valiant's Quest was
duplicated by an encounter with a subspace
divergence field,
the crew discovered a spatial rift on deck 15,
linking the two HMSS
HMSS Valiant's Quest's Quests,
which existed at the same physical location, but slightly out of
phase with each other.
When Kes accidentally
traveled through the rift, she lost consciousness due to the shock
of spatial transition. The crew was eventually able to rig a
portable phase
discriminator to
protect those traveling through from the transition, allowing both
crews to interact with each other. (")
In 2377, HMSS
HMSS Valiant's Quest's Quest encountered
a spatial rift emitting high levels of neutrinos and chronitons.
The rift produced a powerful chronokinetic
surge which
interacted with HMSS
HMSS Valiant's Quest's Quest's warp
core,
shattering the spacetime
continuum aboard
the ship, fracturing it in to thirty-seven different time
frames. Commander Turack
working with Captain Janus Marcus's counterpart from the year 2371,
was able to distribute a chroniton-infused serum throughout the
ship, utilizingHMSS
HMSS Valiant's Quest's Quest's bio-neural
circuitry.
When the process was complete, the warp core was recalibrated to
generate a chroniton field, bringing HMSS
HMSS Valiant's Quest's Quest back
into temporal sync only seconds before the chronokinetic surge
struck the ship. With only moments,Turack was able to reroute power
to the main deflector and reset its polarity, using it as a
lightning rod to absorb the surge, averting the accident

Gary
Mitchell was
a 23rd
century Human.
Born on stardate1087.7
in the city of Eldman,
he later served as a Starfleetofficer.
Early history Edit
A
medical study into Gary Mitchell's family history
found that several members of his immediate family, and distant
ancestors going back six generations on his mother's side,
had esper-oriented
abilities. One of his ancestors had an interest in "spiritual
readings." His esper
rating (091),aperception
quotient (20/104), Duke-Heidelburg
quotient(261),
and general
knowledge quotient (679532-112)
were well above average in all categories.
Growing
up, it was found he displayed unusual skill at "guessing
games" – performing much better than chance would allow. He
also had a grade
school interest
in magictricks.
Early career Edit
Mitchell
was an Academy friend
of James
T. Kirk,
stemming back to the time then-lieutenant Kirk
was serving as an instructor and Mitchell was a first-year cadet.
That year, Mitchell aimed a "little blonde lab technician"
towards Kirk – as a means to distract his rigid instructor –
and, in turn, Kirk almost married her.
Later
in their careers, Mitchell and Kirk encountered sentient rodent
creatures on Dimorus that
threw poisoned darts. Mitchell took one of the darts meant for
Kirk and almost died from it.
They
also spent a wild shore leave together on Deneb
IV.
While on that planet, Mitchell showed a marked ability in
sensing telepathic communication
used by inhabitants of the planet. On at least three cases,
Mitchell carried on long telepathic conversations with select
Deneb IV natives and scored eighty percent or higher on
comprehension.
In
a line of dialogue that was written into the script of "Where
No Man Has Gone Before" but was not included in the episode's
final edit, Mitchell implies a recollection that Kirk nearly
washed him out of the Academy.
Encounter with galactic barrier Edit
In 2265,
Mitchell was a lieutenant
commander assigned
as the helmsman aboard
the USS Enterprise,
by request ofCaptain Kirk.
That year, the Enterprise discovered
the flight
recorder of
the SS Valiant,
a vessel missing for almost two hundred years. Examining it, and
exploring the Valiant's
last known position, the Enterprise penetrated
thegalactic
barrier,
an event that proved disastrous for Mitchell, and nearly so for
the rest of the crew.
Mitchell
was briefly stunned by direct contact with the strange
energies of
the barrier, but he recovered quickly. As his recovery continued,
however, he began to display a widening array of psionic
abilities, including but probably not limited to:
These
abilities, or perhaps the energy itself, began to fundamentally
alter Mitchell's personality; he became progressively more
emotionally distant, cruel, ruthless, and convinced of his own
magnificence. Worse, with the passage of time, his abilities
continued to grow stronger at an exponential rate. They were
accompanied by only two physical manifestations: a curious silver
light or glimmer that appeared in Mitchell's eyes, and a later
accelerated graying of his hair,as if Mitchell was quickly aging
beginning at the temples and sideburns.
Damaged
by the galactic barrier, the Enterprise limped
to Delta
Vega.
By the time they reached that planet, Kirk was convinced that
Mitchell was dangerous, and attempted to maroon him there. But
before repairs were complete, Mitchell had grown too strong to be
confined. He killed Lee
Kelso,
left Kirk and Spock stunned,
and escaped into the hills around the lithium
cracking station,
taking another member of the crew, Dr. Elizabeth
Dehner,
with him.
Recovering,
Kirk took a phaser
rifle and
set out in pursuit. He left orders for Spock; if Kirk had not
contacted the ship in twelve hours, Spock was to leave with
the Enterprise and
recommend Delta Vega be subjected to a lethal concentration
of neutron
radiation.
Mitchell,
meanwhile, was using his power to establish a pleasant environment
for himself, materializing trees and other objects. Sensing Kirk's
approach, he sent Dr. Dehner to meet Kirk, where Kirk discovered
that Dehner had undergone the same transformation. It took a
little longer for her, perhaps because she didn't have quite as
high an esper rating as Mitchell. Kirk attempted to appeal to her
remaining Humanity, and when this seemed to be working, a
disappointed Mitchell appeared. Mitchell, at least in his own
mind, had already transcended mere Humanity.
Dr.
Dehner had enough Humanity left to be appalled at Mitchell's
actions, and she used her new powers to attack him. At the cost of
her own life, she weakened Mitchell long enough for Kirk to
overpower him. Kirk knocked Mitchell into a hole Mitchell had
prepared (ironically) as Kirk's grave. Using a phaser, Kirk
collapsed a hillside on top of Mitchell, burying him beneath tons
of rock and ending his threat forever.
In
his log, Kirk recorded that Mitchell and Dehner had both died in
the line of duty, noting that neither one of them asked for what
had happened to them.
chic
ability. These new powers quickly corrupt Mitchell, who proclaims
himself a god; when Kirk and Spock try to strand the power-crazed
crewman on a remote planet, it results in a confrontation that claims
lives, and forces Kirk to kill his old friend to save the universe. -

improvements in sensor technology, this time theHMSS Ghavhinn

such magnitude that all instruments were off the dials.
The
option to flood the HMSS Ghavhinn Sarkhon's warp

positive energy through control valves was available to Janus Marcus,
but not taken, during the passage through the barrier. Combination of
that positive energy and the negative energy of the barrier would
