Live Indy 500 Tracker: Follow the action The trophy every driver at the Indy 500 wants at the end of today's race. FOX SportsLIVE UPDATES 20Updated May 29, 2011 3:24 PM ET
It's the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500. This year, the race includes four women — most notably Danica Patrick — as well as big Indy names like Marco Andretti. The field also has defending champ Dario Franchitti and three-time winner Helio Castroneves, who is looking to equal racing legends A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears by tying the record for the most Indy 500 wins (four).

How will they perform? Stay logged on throughout Sunday's event for lap-by-lap updates.

Editor's note: Please hit refresh for the latest.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3:22 p.m. ET: Wheldon says he'll wear jeans from sponsor William Rast to the Indy 500 banquet instead of a suit. Says he felt relief when he saw rookie Hildebrand go into wall. Also says Kanaan nearly put him into wall going into Turn 3, gets emotional when he says he's thinking about his mom, who couldn't be at race today. Oh, and he's taking his kids to Disney.

3:21 p.m. ET: Flyover by a U.S. Navy A-4 Skyhawk and a T-2C Buckeye, followed by four U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets.

3:20 p.m. ET: Wheldon takes a drink of milk before handing bottle to Herta. Then he jumps off the car into the arms of his crew -- with the wreath still on.

3:18 p.m. ET: Wheldon makes it to Victory Lane. He didn't even have a full-time ride leading into this season and now he's the Indy 500 champion. Wheldon crying as he shakes hands with team leader Bryan Herta before climbing out of car to get traditional wreath.

Heartbreak for rookie as he crashes on final turn of race. He ends up finishing the race in second, Graham Rahal finishes in third on 25th anniversary of his father Bobby Rahal's Indy 500 win.

Checkered flag under yellow: Rookie JR Hildebrand crashes on last turn. Winner is Dan Wheldon!

White flag: Hildebrand in lead, Franchitti falling back.

Two to go: Rookie Hildebrand in race lead. Castroneves into pits.

Three to go: Baguette heads to pits, Hildebrand takes over lead after passing Franchitti in Turn 1.

Four laps to go: Franchitti in fuel conservation mode, Baguette in lead but may have to pit for fuel.

Five laps to go: Baguette pulling away from second-place Franchitti.

Six laps to go: Baguette in lead.

Seven laps to go: Baguette still in lead, Franchitti may have fuel issue.

Eight laps to go: Baguette still in lead.

Smile for the cameras

Nine laps to go: Baguette, Franchitti, Hildebrand, Dixon, Patrick.

Lap 190: Baguette in lead but also has fuel issue. Patrick in the pits for tires and gas. Marco as well.

Lap 189: Baguette takes over lead from Patrick. Scheckter in pits for final stop.

Lap 188: Patrick would have to go 41 laps on this tank of gas to go to the finish. Beatriz in pits.

Lap 186: Patrick, Baguette, Scheckter, Andretti, Franchitti round out top five.

Lap 185: With 15 laps left, Patrick is in the lead but group of cars is catching up.

Lap 183: On Patrick's radio, crew thinks they have 10 more laps of fuel on board her car.

Lap 181: Patrick still on top, leading the Indy 500 for the second time in her career. She was the first woman in the history of Indy to lead the historic race.

Lap 180: Patrick takes the lead but is reported to be short a bit on fuel. Can she make it to the end without another stop?

Lap 179: Rahal in the pits for final time in race. Servia also in pits, Wheldon and Dixon duck in too.

Lap 175: Dixon, Rahal, Kanaan, Servia, Wheldon. Patrick in sixth, Marco in ninth, Dario is 10th.

Lap 174: Marco has personal best lap to get back into top 10.

Lap 172: Dixon takes lead back from Rahal.

FOXSports.com's Lee Spencer: Townsend Bell: "It's just madness on those restarts I got into to one and was clipped in the right rear…"

Lap 171: Servia is dropping back as Kanaan moves into third spot.

Lap 170: Rahal leads, followed by Servia, Dixon, Kanaan, Wheldon, Scheckter, Patrick, Carpenter, Franchitti, Baguette.

Lap 168: Only 13 cars left on the lead lap. Servia is closing gap between him and Rahal.

Lap 167: Franchitti back in 11th but hopes he won't have to stop again before the end of the race.

Lap 166: Green! Servia followed by Rahal and Dixon. Rahal takes the lead from Servia through Turn 1.

FOXSports'com's Lee Spencer: Ryan Briscoe: "No luck, Townsend didn’t see that I was running on the inside of him. I thought he was going to leave me room … I guess he didn’t know I was there and just pulled out."

Lap 164: Franchitti pits.

Twitter: @FollowAndretti Michael to Marco: Save fuel, this could work to our advantage. #Indy500

Lap 159: Patrick, Power among cars in pits under yellow flag.

CAUTION Lap 158: Bell and Briscoe in the wall. Briscoe tries to pass Bell but Bell comes down into his line and both cars hit Turn 1 wall. Also Castroneves' left rear tire is cut by debris. He's in for a tire change for that one only.

Lap 155: Green! Cars go double file again to the green flag with Franchitti getting huge jump out front, then Dixon and Wheldon. Car pushed to warm up lane as too many cars try to get through Turn 3.

Lap 150: Only 50 laps left with Franchitti leading the field behind pace car, then Dixon, Servia, Wheldon. Kanaan has pulled himself up to fifth, followed by Hildebrand, Patrick, Rahal, Carpenter, Marco. Castroneves is 18th. Other women drivers in the field: Mann is 22nd, Beatriz is 24th, De Silvestro is out of the race.

Lap 149: Field crowds up behind pace as Tagliani pulls into pits and gets out of car. Suspension is busted from the hit.

CAUTION Lap 148: Polesitter Tagliani hits the wall in Turn 4. Car got too high into the turn. Sixth caution of the race.

Twitter: @FollowAndretti Great pit stop by the #Venom crew! #Indy500

Twitter: @smillerFOX Glazer kisses the bricks.

Lap 141: Franchitti back in the lead, followed by Servia, Dixon, Marco, Wheldon.

Race of the century
Check out photos of the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500.
Lap 139: Rookie Hildebrand takes over top spot again before heading into pits. Patrick gets wing adjustment as part of routine pit stop.

FOXSports.com's Lee Spencer: Tire wear has not been an issue for Marco who started 27th but has been running in the top 5.

Lap 137: Servia in the pits as well as Wheldon. Franchitti ducks in too and getting a front wing adjustment. Kanaan gets four tires and fuel.

Lap 136: Franchitti passes Tagliani to put him a lap down. Tagliani is struggling, now in 17th spot. Bell to pits from sixth spot.

Lap 129: Franchitti reclaims lead from Servia with a pass on the front stretch.

FOXSports.com's Lee Spencer: Hinchcliffe called his accident "a classic rookie mistake."

Lap 127: From ABC: Charlie Kimball's blood glucose level is creeping up. A crew member has been assigned the added task of giving his driver a shot of insulin during the next pit stop if needed. Kimball is diabetic and his glucose level is being monitored in real-time during the race.

Lap 125: With 75 laps remaining running order is Servia, Franchitti, Dixon, Andretti, Wheldon, Bell, Carpenter, Hildebrand, Briscoe, Patrick.

Twitter: @MarioAndretti Next stop we will trim Marco and see what happens. He says he can't win unless......

Lap 124: Kanaan into 13th with his fastest lap of the race.

Lap 120: Top five: Servia, Franchitti, Marco, Dixon, Bell. Oil temperature still an issue for Tagliani. He's now dropped down to 13th spot.

Lap 119: Danica's crew says they believe they can make the race on two more pit stops.

Lap 115: Notable names: Franchitti second, Marco is third, Patrick 10th, Kanaan up to 15th, Rahal 16th, Castroneves 19th.

Lap 113: Servia takes lead from Franchitti with pass on the backstretch. He's driving for Newman/Haas Racing, which has never won an Indy 500.

Lap 111: Castroneves passes Franchitti to gain a lap back so he's now on the lead lap again.

Lap 110: Franchitti leads with Servia and Marco in top three. Papers from the fans starting to build up on track, could be an overheating issue if a driver sucks up one of those into the car.

Lap 106: Green! Franchitti leads the field down again.

Lap 104: Marco leads field under caution for first time this year before losing spot for pit stop. Meanwhile, ABC interviews Dick Harroun, son on first Indy 500 winner Ray Harroun.

FOXSports.com's Lee Spencer: De Silvestro's car has problem with right rear tow length. She's still in her uniform and intends on returning to action.

Twitter: @IndyCarPR @JRHildebrand led the 100th lap of the 100th Anniversary #indy500 and is the 200th different leader in the race's history.

Lap 104: Cars hit pit road, including leader rookie Hildebrand.

Lap 103: Reports say Tagliani may have a high oil temperature issue.

WHO'S NO. 1?
See the 2011 IndyCar standings here.
Lap 100: Franchitti gets lucky again, pits right before they close for caution. Castroneves gets a wing adjustment during his pit stop.

CAUTION Lap 100: Hinchcliffe in the wall in Turn 4. "Guys, I'm really, really, really sorry," he says over the radio after the incident. Hinchcliffe has a NASCAR connection, as he competed against NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger earlier in their careers.

Lap 99: Franchitti in the lead as Dixon pits.

Lap 98: Bell in the pits, Andretti as well.

Lap 95: Sons of former Indy 500 drivers in top 10. Rahal up to 8th, Marco comes in at 10 spot.

FOXSports.com's Lee Spencer: Kanaan after restarting 24th: I have to pass all these cars again?

Lap 93: Dixon continues to lead field with Franchitti in second and Wheldon in third.

Twitter: @FollowAndretti Michael to Marco: Half tank

Lap 88: Rahal is making steady progress in field. Started 29th and is now in the top 10.

FOXSports.com's Lee Spencer: Jay Howard has been seen and released from the infield care center.

Lap 80: Dixon leads, followed by Franchitti, Tagliani, Wheldon, Bell, Hildebrand, Servia, Carpenter, Scheckter, Rahal. Marco is 12th, Patrick is 14th, Castroneves 20th.

Lap 78: Ryan Hunter-Reay is last car on the lead lap but has tapped the wall and is falling back rapidly.

Lap 76: De Silvestro is out of the race. She says car hasn't felt right since he tagged the wall early in the race. Will end her day in 31st place. She says her hands hurt a little bit after burning them in practice earlier this month.

Lap 71: Green flag! With green flag and then yellow flag pit stops all sorted out, Franchitti leads field back to racing.

Lap 69: Tony Kanaan came in fourth, but Pippa Mann came through his pits and he couldn’t get in. Kanaan is going to restart in 23rd spot.

Twitter: @FollowAndretti Danica: "Good job boys!" #Indy500

Lap 65: Pits open for all drivers under caution. Danica back in for tires.

Lap 63: Danica comes in before pit lane is open to drivers under caution -- she's allowed because she was running out of fuel. It was so close she had trouble getting car started after pit stop. Unfortunately, she'll have to come in once pits are officially open to get tires. Vitor Meira and Graham Rahal also have to get a splash of gas to keep going.

CAUTION Lap 62: Jay Howard crashes into inside wall between Turns 1 and 2. He just came out after pit stop. Looks like right wheel tire was loose and came off before he even got out of warm-up lane. Franchitti gets lucky break because he is in pits before crash so he gets to have full service.

Lap 61: Leader Dixon in the pits.

Lap 60: Castroneves pitting as well as Bell, John Andretti and Buddy Rice.

Lap 59: Beartriz coming into pits.

Lap 53: Where are the women? Danica is the highest in 19th spot, followed by Ana Beatriz in 24th, Pippa Mann behind her in 25th and De Silvestro in 30th place, 11 laps down.

Lap 50: Dixon leads at quarter-point of Indy 500. He's followed by Franchitti and Wheldon. Marco Andretti is up to 18th with teammate Danica Patrick up at 19th. Three-time winner Castroneves is 13th.

FOXSports.com's Lee Spencer: Sato and Viso have been seen and released at in-field medical center.

Lap 45: Tagliani drops another spot as Wheldon passes him for third position.

Lap 44: Franchitti takes over second spot from Tagliani. Teammate Dixon is still leading.

Lap 40: Top 10: Dixon, Tagliani, Franchitti, Wheldon, Bell, Carpenter, Kanaan, Meira, Servia, Rice. Rahal is 17th, Marco 19th, Patrick 22nd.

Lap 38: Franchitti is coming on strong to try and take second place from Tagliani.

Lap 37: Other notable drivers: Kanaan is 8th, Castroneves is 14th, Rahal is 18th followed by Marco in 19th, Danica Patrick is 22nd.

Lap 35: Dixon retakes lead. Dixon and Tagliani are the only leaders of this race so far. Franchitti is third.

Lap 34: Another double file restart. Dixon takes the green -- again -- but Tagliani passes him for first place into Turn 1.

CAUTION Lap 27: EJ Viso hits the wall in Turn 1. Got squeezed into wall after trying to go three-wide into the turn. Marco Andretti has close call but goes low enough to avoid incident.

Lap 27: Dixon takes green after first double file restart in Indy 500 history.

Twitter: @FollowAndretti: Michael: Hey Marco, your tires look really good, ran 23 laps on them

Twitter: @FollowAndretti: Danica coming in for wing adjustment

Lap 23: Cars in the pit. Will Power loses left rear tire after wheel nut isn't secured during pit stop. He's driving around track with three tires and coming back in to get another left rear. De Silvestro doesn't pit to try and make up lost laps from earlier in race.

CAUTION Lap 21: Takuma Sato hits the wall on Turn 2, bringing out first caution of the day. Just a lap earlier, Paul Tracy had to go to the pits for after appearing to touch the wall — tough luck for the man many believe should already be known as an Indy 500 winner.

Lap 20: Tagliani opening up lead over Dixon, followed by Bell, Wheldon and Franchitti.

Lap 17: Graham Rahal up to 21st spot after starting 29th, making him the biggest mover so far.

Lap 11: Top five: Tagliani, Dixon, Townsend Bell, Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti.

Lap 10: Oriel Servia is falling in the field, now sitting in the sixth spot.

Lap 8: Tagliani makes a quick pass on the front straight to pass Dixon for lead. This is his first time leading the Indy 500 in his career.

Lap 7: De Silvestro had a brush earlier in the race with the wall. Out of the pits after taking four new tires.

Lap 5: Dixon and Tagliani are pulling away from rest of field. Simona de Silvestro in pit road and one lap down but no word on what the problem is.

Lap 1: Polesitter Alex Tagliani takes the green flag, but it's a crazy start to the race as cars try to time the start correctly. Scott Dixon takes early lead.

12:11 p.m. ET: Cars roll off for parade laps behind the pace car, driven by four-time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt.

12:09 p.m. ET: Mary Hulman George gives the "Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!" command.

12:07 p.m. ET: Jim Nabors takes the podium for his traditional performance of "Back Home Again in Indiana" before the race starts. And the balloons are in the air!

12:04 p.m. ET: American troops are honored with the playing of "Taps" and a gun salute.

12:03 p.m. ET: Drivers have been called to their cars - it's almost race time!

BREAKING NEWS 11:55 a.m. ET: FOXSports.com's senior writer Lee Spencer spoke with the owner of Danica Patrick's primary sponsor, GoDaddy.com, who said, “Am I happy if she would (switch to NASCAR in 2012)? I would be thrilled. Would I move with her? If I can stroke the check I will." Full story

Yes, it's a spec car race now and certaily not what it used to be. It ain't bad, though. Those spec cars are going over 200 mph and there are some damn good drivers out there. And, for a change, the racing is good this year..so far.

I'd like to see an american win today...even Marco. Report Abuse
